Mark Zuckerberg Twitter: Has Facebook boss reacted to the 'hack'?

MARK ZUCKERBERG is the media mogul behind the Facebook brand. Has he spoken out after WhatsApp and Instagram went down today with Facebook users reporting their app not working?

Mark Zuckerberg is best known as the co-founder and current CEO of Facebook. But despite being a social media expert, the entrepreneur is difficult to track down online. In fact, the self-made billionaire hasn't issued a single tweet or updated his profile on Twitter - one of the main platforms he doesn't own - since March 2009.

Millions of users have reported issues with the apps, with many not working or failing to connect.

Facebook, which owns the three platforms facing problems today, has had to turn to its rival to issue a statement, however, which said: "We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience."

WhatsApp, the instant messaging service owned by Facebook, issued an update on Twitter.

It said: "We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment.

"We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible.

"Thanks for your patience!"

Similarly, photo and video posting social media platform Instagram, also shared an update on Twitter regarding the outage.

It said: " Instagram and friends are having a little bit of a hard time right now, and you may be having issues using them.

"Bear with us, we’re on it! #instagramdown"

According to independent service DownDetector, which tracks user complaints across social media to report online service outages, the peak of Facebook's outage was at 4:57pm.

The peak of WhatsApp's outage was recorded by DownDetector at 4:55pm.

At this time, more than 74,000 people had reported outages. By 6:12pm, this number had shrunk to around 12,000.

Instagrams peak outage was reported to be at 4:59pm.

At this time, approximately 30,000 people complained of difficult accessing the app.

By 6:14pm, this number had shrunk to 6,000.

What caused the Facebook outage?
Facebook is often rather mysterious when it comes to its apps going down.

Often, it does not report the cause of an outage even after the problem has been fixed and apps are running as usual again.

User Mike Sington said: "Facebook, as well as WhatsApp and Instagram owned by Facebook, are all down.

"Coincidence, after whistleblower levels major bombshells against Facebook or major hack taking them down?"

Though some Twitter users have speculated it could be the result of a hack, there is no clear evidence from Facebook that this is the case.
