The Science behind why you like to smell your underwear

The way we interact with our environment is  based on how we are built as human beings. The technicalities on which we function are founded on Energy reactions. Every experience is enabled by the reactions of energy happening within the scopes of our physical human senses. The story of smelling your underwear to know if its clean is the subject matter of this piece. But whats that got to do with anything? Thought you would never ask.

Your vision is facilitated by your eyes. Light bounces off objects, that light reaches your eyes and the reaction that occurs on the surface of your eyeballs causes you to see things. There is an energy reaction taking place between your physical eyes and the light that reaches it. That’s how your vision works. Energy reactions. If that’s the case, you can see why its normal for you to rely on your eyesight to detect the conditions of matter around you. You want to know if something is beautiful? All you have to do is lay your eyes on it. You want to know the shape of the an object? Just look at it. You want to understand the condition of the space you are occupying? Just look around you. The pattern here is that you, as a person, have to direct your eyesight on things in order to have them fall in your field of view.

Sight is important but there are things that sight cant do. Such as spotting the dirt on your underwear.

As important as eyesight is, it is not enough. That’s why you have four other physical senses to compliment your eyeballs in the process of navigating through space. These other senses: hearing, touch, taste and smelling also work on the basis of energy reaction. Hearing happens when sound waves, containing energy, reach your eardrums which are optimized to break down energy waves to enable the detection of sound waves resulting in hearing. That’s how you listen to music, conversations, and other sounds that come from your immediate environment. Energy reactions.

Hearing is clearly vital  But obviously, hearing isnt enough. There are things you cant listen to, like the dirt on your underwear.

The senses of taste and touch work perfectly when there is direct contact with physical matter. Food has to be in your mouth for you to taste it. Energy reactions, in the form of chemical reactions, occur between your taste buds and the food you put in your mouth. That’s how you get to enjoy healthy homecooked food and unhealthy fast foods. Taste works in a universal manner, and as such, you can have a great experience, or not,  from whatever that arrives in your mouth. Again, energy reactions.

But obviously there are things you cannot taste, like the dirt on your underwear.

With touch, the nerve senses in your skin are purposed to detect physical contact with other material objects. The sense of Touch is quite compelling and has had a huge influence on the human experience. You are a materialistic being because you like to touch things and feel them. Its as if a very large portion of your earthly experience is about making contact with material objects including other human beings. There is nothing evil or petty about being materialistic. In this physical realm , sentient human beings gain immense joy from manipulating and modifying physical matter, something that is aided by your tactile capability. You are driven to touch things. You want to touch money and all the things that money can buy. You naturally like to touch your loved ones and hug them, shake their hands, hold their hands and all that other stuff. You even like the sensation of touching yourself. The sense of Touch has a kingly status within the sphere of human experience.

But as kingly as the sense of Touch is, it isnt enough. There are things you cannot just touch. Like the dirt on your underwear.

Enter the sense of Smell. Before going any further, you ever wonder why you can smell damn near anything? Damn, you can even smell whether someone is making sense! Someone might be in the middle of talking to you and they say "Do you smell me?", which is a way to ask if you understand where they are coming from. Smell. The smell of food compliments the taste of food. The new car smell compliments the tactile driving experience. You cannot drive a common car without touching the steering wheel, of which the navigation is aided by your visual capacity.  But back to smelling. The sense of smell is a smooth operator. It does things that other senses only wish they could.

This is where I wanted to point out that you can actually smell the dirt on your underwear to know if its clean. Question: why do we like to do that?

Smelling can be likened to a subatomic reaction, because you do not have to physically make contact with something  in order to smell it. Do you have to see someone to tell if they are there? No. You can simply detect their presence or absence, by detecting the presence or absence of their body oduor. Smell. Its pleasing when someone says you look good, but its nice to be told you smell nice. You shamelessly spend big money on expensive cologne and deodorants. And I see why you would do that.

Nobody likes to breath in bad smells. You don’t it like it and neither do I.

A scenario: You just came back home from jogging or from running your errands. You are tired and you straight up decide to take off your clothes and put on your homebody clothes. Like normal people, you don’t do your dirty laundry unless its in a pile. So what happens is you shed strip down all your clothes after getting home, and you throw it on your other dirty pile of clothes. The weekend is here, and you now want to do your laundry. Question:

How do you verify that all the clothes in your dirty pile of clothes, are actually dirty and deserve to be washed?

For the most part, your underwear is special because it does not get dirty like your other garments do. Your shirt might be stained by muddy water, and your hoodie might be dirtied by god-knows what. The dirt on your underwear is unlike any other dirt. It is composed of body secretions that occur in your balls, penis and vaginal parts. Lets not forget the ass area. A lot of secretions happen in your ass crack. These secretions are not easily detectible with your eyes. You can look at your underwear and still you wouldn’t be sure if its clean or not. The natural thing to do, for most people is to pick up their underwear and smell it. You do it Shamelessly and with impunity and so do I.  Usually, we do this to know if its clean to be worn again, or dirty to be washed, again.

People who like to wear snow white under garments have an easy time telling the condition of their underwear.

You and I are not among those people. We have a lot of underwear whose color isnt snow white. Due to this, we cant ascertain whether they are dirty or clean unless we  pick them up with our hands, look at them with our eyes, and finally smell them to make a clear judgement before deciding what to do with them. Smelling your dirty underwear is vividly gross. But it makes sense.

Just like the other senses, Smelling is an energy reaction. However, it’s a subtle sense compared to lets say, sight or sound, or touch or taste. Minus the ability to smell, your life would be tasteless. No, am not jesting. Smelling is the God of human senses. It works in mysterious ways. That’s because it is akin to Breathing; and what is life without Breath? If you couldn’t breath, you couldn’t smell. You would be dead, and only alive in our hearts. Smelling is key, not because we count on it to know if our underwear is clean, or if food is burning on the stove, but because it is linked to our Life stream through Breath.

To be inspired is to breath. Inspiration is Breath. People, you among them, care a lot about inspiration.

We don’t have to learn how to breath. It’s literally the first thing we do when we leave the wombs of our mothers. As a primary function, we can trust our Breathing capacity to help us navigate through life because it’s a super basic human function. Smelling is a property of Breath. You can trust your sense of smell to do what other senses cant do. Such as detecting the dirt on your undies.

The primary ability to breath is reliable and so is the sense of smell which comes along with it. Do you smell me?
